 Training Employees
Employer Initiatives

The Governor’s Workforce Board recognizes that in order to be effective, workforce development efforts must be aligned with and informed by the workforce needs of employers. The GWB is committed to developing and supporting policies and programs that:

  • Increase employer investments in training
  • Increase the number of self-sustaining jobs
  • Increase employer involvement in apprenticeships
  • Expand skills partnerships
  • Increase credentials
  • Increase the fill rate of high-wage jobs

To accomplish these objectives, the GWB has undertaken the following efforts:

Incumbent Worker Training Grants

Incumbent Worker Training Grants support the competitiveness and growth of Rhode Island businesses. Employers can apply for matching funds to invest in incumbent worker training that builds and retains a high-skilled, high-performance workforce. Program goals are to increase worker productivity, to improve operational efficiencies and to create workplace innovation, talent development and promotional opportunities.

Industry Partnerships

GWB Industry Partnerships form powerful coalitions of companies, institutions and organizations which are linked by common markets, labor pools and technology.  The purpose of Industry Partnerships is to align the state’s resources with the workforce needs of vital sectors of the Rhode Island economy so that businesses within these industries have access to appropriately skilled employees, and that job seekers have the skills, training and support they need to meet employer demand in these industries.

Employer Engagement

The GWB recognizes that in order to be effective, workforce development efforts must be aligned with and informed by the workforce needs of employers.  To this end, the GWB has formed an Employer Committee to raise awareness of existing programs and services, obtain valuable employer feedback, and establish an on-going Employer Advisory Group.

Apprenticeships

The GWB supports the expansion of apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs as a proven strategy for developing a skilled workforce.  The GWB has partnered with the Department of Labor & Training and the State Apprenticeship Council to establish new apprenticeship programs in non-traditional industries and occupations.
